Eligibility

Single-Origin
Coffee Beans Selection

  • The coffee beans are single products instead of being mixed formula beans.
  • They have to possess a production history from a specific farm, and the flavor of these coffee beans must be able to present its original appearance.
  • They need to have the characteristics of specific coffee grown in the specific area.
  • Bean production needs to be in between 25 degrees north to 25 degrees south.
  • They can be traced back to the production farm, producer, and are clearly marked.
  • The origin of the coffee beans should be from a fair and legal farm or manor that is sufficiently identifiable.

Blend Coffee Beans

  • Coffee beans are blended from different production areas to create rich and different flavors of coffee.
  • Bean production needs to be in between 25 degrees north to 25 degrees south.
  • Can be traced back to the production farm, producer (one or more).
  • The origin of the coffee beans should be from a fair and legal farm or manor that is sufficiently identifiable.

Arabica
Beans Selection

  • The temperature must be between 15 and 24 degrees, and the humidity must be between 55% and 65%.
  • The planting area needs to be 3000-6000 feet (about 600-2000 meters high altitude area).
  • Bean production needs to be in between 25 degrees north to 25 degrees south.
  • Can be traced back to the production farm, producer, and clearly marked.
  • The origin of the coffee beans should be from a fair and legal farm or manor that is sufficiently identifiable.
    

    To participate in "Arabica Beans Selection", your coffee beans must meet the following calculations (refer to SCA standards), and the sample is 350g:

  • No severe defects (full black, fully sour, pods, moldy beans, foreign impurities, severely insect-damaged beans).
  • Partial defects don’t exceed 1% of the total amount (partially black, partially sour, parchment, floater beans, quaker beans, shrunken beans, shell beans, broken/cut beans, peels and shells, partially insect-damaged beans).
  • “Quakers (unripe beans)” are not allowed in ripe coffee beans.
  • The color of green coffee beans depends on the production area, processing method and aging time, and the accepted range of the color for green coffee beans are pale yellow, yellow-green, greenish, green, Bluish-green, blue-green. (Among them, the paler yellow, yellowish and brownish colors cannot be regarded as specialty grades).
  • There shouldn’t be any unexpected odors.

Identity

Manufacturers, farms and manors, companies, small farmers, brand agents, brand distributors, farm agents, self-roasted or roasting agencies are allowed to register.


Qualifications

  • Needs to be legally registered by the local government or have accreditation that complies with/is equivalent to international standards such as ISO9000, ISO14001, ISO18001, ISO22000, ISO50001 (International Organization for Standardization, ISO) and can provide and identifiable relevant information.
  • Nominated annually by the GSA Committee and meet the 1st qualification.
  • The country of origin is a member of the International Coffee Organization (ICO) and its implementation also complies with the International Coffee Convention.

Criteria Standard

The final appraisal is based on a total percentage
(includes bonus items), quality medals, and past selection results.

Sourness15%The sourness has a fresh or tangy taste, which cannot be described using pH values. It can be tasted from the tip of the tongue and on both sides or spreads out from behind the jawbone, which is a pleasant experience.
Mellowness/Taste15%Mellowness is the weight of the coffee on the tongue, its rich or light taste can leave quite an impression on people.
Flavor/mouthfeel15%The final experience of the palate, from the passing breeze to the strong impressions, or the delicate and elegant quality that can change the final dramatic experiences provided by the coffee

WLCP supports all the right actions by companies to limit the carbon footprint, labor exploitation, animal testing, and non-recyclable materials. (relevant information must be submitted)

Product Evaluation Sequence

  • Regardless of each category, please fill in the 2022 World Latitude Caffe Prize Registration Form in advance for all participating coffee bean selections. If you have relevant information that can be submitted, please send it to info@wl-c.org.
  • The coffee beans should be sent to the designated receiving place you selected in the registration form within three months after roasting. The GSA review committee will assess the beans within one month after receiving the delivery to ensure the freshness and stability of the beans.
  • The World Latitude Caffe Prize will announce the annual Gold Award Coffee on the official website of the World Latitude Caffe Prize in early April each year, and also announce the top 5 awards for each country, and send the coffee quality medal certificates all at once.

Notices

  • All participating coffees will be coded and blindly-packaged before they’re given to the GSA judges.
  • The participating coffees will be randomly assigned to each GSA judge for judging and scoring. During the process, the coffees will be randomly exchanged amongst the GSA judges to ensure fairness. The coding information will not be disclosed to the public or the GSA judges.
  • All participating coffees will be evaluated and scored by two GSA judges at the same time.
  • The GSA committee members will clean their mouths before tasting and scoring the coffees. In order to ensure fairness that the next entry won’t be affected, the GSA committee will not be allowed to drink the coffees.
  • The contested coffee with a total score difference of more than 10% between the two GSA judges will be judged by the third committee member.
  • Participants must abide by the World Latitude Caffe Prize regulations and selection results. If the participants are not satisfied with the selection scores, please refrain from radical, unreasonable protests and appeals. The organizer, the World Latitude Caffe Prize, reserves the right to make final changes and interpretations of the results.
